Archbishop Carlson has suggested that parishes in the Archdiocese recite the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel for our country at this moment in history and especially for the safety of our brave military personnel, police officers, firefighters and first responders. After discussing this with the Parish Liturgy Committee, we have decided to recite the prayer together at the conclusion of all the Sunday Masses in September, leading up to the Feast of St. Michael and the other Archangels (Sts. Gabriel and Raphael) on September 29. The prayer that we will recite together can be found on the back of the Breaking Bread hymnal and will be led by the cantor at the conclusion of the final hymn.
Our middle school students are enjoying their introduction to Holy Cross Academy on the Annunciation campus. There is a tremendous amount of excitement as we move from wonderment and imagination about what it will be like to full-blown reality. Our middle school hosted three separate events, one for each grade, so that the new students could mix with the returning students and they could begin to get to know one another. I was able to attend two of these mixers and be present on the first day of school and at an opening student assembly. Our sixth grade has 51 students, our seventh grade has 85 students and our eighth grade has 76 students in it. Lily Damole, Rosie Sitner and Lisa Slama took the lead in organizing these events for the students in sixth and seventh and eighth grades, respectively. Thanks to Lily, Rosie and Lisa for helping to smooth the transition.
St. Dominic Savio continues to have its own fund-raisers for the exclusive support of the parish. They include the following:
- Alphabet Club (year round)
- Trivia Night (October 9)
- Poinsettia/Advent Wreath Sale (November and December)
- Annual Dinner Auction (Saturday, February 25)
- Laura Albes Scholarship Golf Tournament (Spring)
- Scrip (year round)
You can really help out the parish by supporting these activities or by getting involved.
Like many parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Louis, St. Dominic Savio subscribes to the Paul VI Institute which allows any and all SDS parishioners to take class FREE of charge. This is a tremendous opportunity waiting for you to use it and build up your knowledge and love of your Faith. Please contact the rectory for more information. I want to thank our Boy Scouts who were needed on a moment’s notice to help out the parish and our school. The scouts included Mason Merris, Alex Valentine, Baker Merris, Patrick Garner and Sawyer Merris. Thanks, also, to Deacon John and Chris Merris for organizing this effort at the very last minute.
We are happy to receive Mass Intentions for your departed loved ones. It is a time honored and salutary practice to have Masses offered for family members and friends who have died. The customary offering is $5.00 per Mass, although Masses are offered upon request, whether or not the person is able to make the offering.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us,
Fr. Paul J. Rothschild
