The Church's teaching on man's path thought life

1. God created man and gave him free will.

2. Because Adam and Eve disobeyed God, sin and death entered the world.

3. All human beings, with the exception of Jesus and the Blessed Mother, were conceived with the stain of original sin.

4. Original sin inclines every human being to commit personal sin.

5. Our eternal salvation comes through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

6. Baptism in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit washes away original and personal sin.

7. The Sacrament of Baptism claims us for Christ and makes us members of His Body: the Church.

8. The Body of Christ is comprised of the Church militant, the Church suffering, and the Church triumphant; respectively, those on earth, those in purgatory, and those in heaven.

9. God gives us all the grace we need to avoid sin and to spend eternity with Him in heaven.

10. God offers two types of grace: actual and sanctifying.

11. Every man, woman, and child receive actual grace. The baptized receive sanctifying grace through the seven sacraments.

12. Sin damages our relationship with God.

13. There are two gravities of sin: venial and mortal.

14. Venial sin can lead to mortal sin.

15. Venial sin is forgiven when we receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

16. When we freely and knowingly commit mortal sin, we reject God. Mortal sin and God's sanctifying grace cannot share our immortal souls.

17. If we die in a state of mortal sin, we condemn ourselves to eternal damnation in hell.

18. The Sacrament of Reconciliation cleanses our souls of mortal sin.

19. If we die in a state of venial sin, our souls must be made clean before we enter the presence of God in heaven. This cleansing occurs in purgatory.

20. Each person will experience two judgments: the Particular and the General.

21. The Particular Judgment occurs at the moment we die. Our soul leaves our body, comes before Jesus, and is judged for heaven or hell.

22. Heaven and hell are the two final and eternal destinations.

23. Purgatory is not a final destination or a second chance to get into heaven.

24. Sin has a double consequence: eternal and temporal punishment.

25. Eternal punishment is brought on by mortal sin and is forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

26. Both venial and mortal sin involves an unhealthy attraction to self-love and the created things of this world. This attraction is the temporal stain of sin.

27. The temporal stain of sin must be purged either before we die or after we die.

28. This stain of sin cannot be purged in heaven for nothing unclean can enter heaven; and there is no need to purge it hell. This cleansing of the stain of sin occurs in purgatory.

29. When we use God's grace to patiently bear our earthly sufferings and trials, commit our lives to prayer, partake of the sacraments, gain an indulgence, faithfully worship God, strive to do works of mercy and charity, and serenely face death, God wipes away part or all of the temporal stain of sin.

30. If the temporal stain of sin has been totally wiped away at the time of our death, our soul enters heaven.

31. If some of this stain remains, it is purged in purgatory.

32. This purification frees one from the temporal punishment of sin.

33. When we offer our prayers, almsgiving, works of penance, and the Sacrifice of the Mass for souls in purgatory, God applies our effort toward the temporal stain of sin of those souls in purgatory.

34. The Church does not teach that purgatory is a physical place; nor does it teach that one spends a certain amount of time or days there. It does teach that those in purgatory suffer.

35. The Second Coming of Christ will occur at the end of time. Jesus will come in His glory and all the angels with Him.

36. When Jesus comes again, He will judge the living and the dead. The bodies and souls of the living will come before the judgment seat of Christ. Likewise, the bodies of all the dead, the just and the unjust, will be resurrected and reunited with their souls; then they will come before the judgment seat of Christ.

37. The General Judgment will occur and our complete life will be revealed to everyone. We will know and accept why some of us will spend eternity in heaven and others will spend eternity in hell.

38. Purgatory will cease to exist.
